Habituation is a form of non-associative learning in which an animal learns to ignore an inconsequential stimulus, after being exposed to it repeatedly, or for extended periods of time.
For example, puppies will habituate to loud traffic noises when they figure out that these have no consequences.
In dogs, the critical window for habituation closes when they are about 12 weeks old.
These are some of the most important things pups need to be habituated to:
- The urban environment and everything that comes with it: traffic, crowds, loud sounds, etc;
- Various methods of transportation;
- Lots of varied people, dogs, and animals;
- Being handled, poked, and prodded in awkward, but gentle, ways;
- Inclement whether;
